Cyclops krull

Rell in the Great Swamp.

"Each to his Fate."

Rell is a Cyclop on the planet Krull. A member of an ancient race that befell foul of striking a bargain with The Beast, sacrificing one of their eyes in order to gain the power of foresight. However, they were cheated as the only future they were permitted to see was that of their own death.

Rell, like many of his kind lived in solitude, plagued by the visions of his death. Despite this, he was known to visit the Emerald Seer from time to time and was familiar with the stories of Ynir the Old One. After the fall of the Kingdoms of Krull, he learned that Ynir has moved down from his mountain home and decided that his time had come. At first, he kept his distance from Colwyn and his growing band of adventurers, at first startling Ergo the Magnificent in the forest at the foot of the Granite Mountains and then saving him from a Slayer waiting in ambush on their way to see the Emerald Seer. He made his presence known to the group when he assisted them in fighting off a Slayer ambush in the Great Swamp, even making advancing Slayers back off after killing one with a spear throw. He then formally joined the group, forging a special friendship with Ergo, and becomes admired for his power and kindness by the Bandits.

During the trek deeper into the swamp, he helped save group members caught in quicksand caused by tampering from the Beast and then volunteered to hang back in case they were being followed. It was here that he learned that the Emerald Seer had been killed and then replaced by a Changeling during the chaos of the rescue effort earlier, after the Seer's body was pushed up from the ground. Rushing back, he was able to save Colwyn from an attempted assassination by the Changeling, hurling his spear at it and incapacitating it long enough for Colwyn to kill it.

Rell travelled with the group to a forest near the mountains where the Widow of the Web was located, striking camp for the night with the others while Ynir ventured alone to seek her help in tracking the Black Fortress. After Ynyr returned at dawn and revealed the next location of the Black Fortress; in the Iron Desert 1000 leagues from their position, before dying as the enchanted sand in his hands ran dry, Rell is the one who tells Colwyn of the Fire Mares, the only means to cover 1000 leagues in a single day. After herding the fire mares with some difficulty, he informs the group that he must stay behind as the moment of his death was approaching.

Bulletproof cyclops

A Slayer's blast hits Rell with little effect.

Nevertheless, in what could be considered an act of defiance against Fate, when Colwyn and his party is held back by the Slayers right at the foot of the Black Fortress, Rell rides to their aid. Taking point, and drawing the Slayers' fire away from them and taking hit after hit, Rell storms The Black Fortress with the other following in his wake. Reaching the nearest entry, he killed the slayer defender and held the doorway open for the others to enter. No sooner he did but dawn broke and the Black Fortress was preparing to travel once more. Rell sacrifices himself to hold the door open long enough for the survivors to get through. Despite efforts from Colwyn and Torquil to help him, Rell merely told them that it was his time as the stone doors slowly crushed him. Choosing death on his own terms rather than that of Fate.
